The Orlando Magic appear to have a set and relatively deep rotation available to them. It all hinges though on who starts at power forward.
Orlando Magic training camp opens Saturday with a lot of questions. We will answer a good chunk of those over at Orlando Magic Daily in the coming weeks as training camp starts.
Things though seem pretty settled for a good chunk of the rotation. Nikola Vucevic will start at center. Tobias Harris will start at one of the forward spots. Victor Oladipo and Elfrid Payton will be the guards.
There is just one spot in the starting lineup to fill and lot of different players and options to go with.
There are the veterans. The young players. The probable Sixth Man. The second-year player.
Scott Skiles will have a lot of options when he begins to build his rotation. The first piece to that puzzle though is finding a starter, and it will be one of the biggest questions entering camp as Zach Oliver of Orlando Pinstriped Post writes:
The power forward spot is one that could be a key for the Magic and their potential success this season. Both [Aaron] Gordon and [Channing] Frye offer qualities that would help the starting unit, and the bench units. Coach Skiles and his staff will have a big decision to make for opening night against the Washington Wizards on October 28th.
There is still time to make that decision and Skiles will almost certainly be reviewing potential combinations throughout preseason and training camp.
The going consensus is, if he is ready, Aaron Gordon should be the Magic’s starter at power forward. His defensive versatility along with offensive capabilities make him a better match with Nikola Vucevic than Dewayne Dedmon (all defense, no offense) or Channing Frye (all offense, no defense). It would provide better balance to the second unit too where C.J. Watson, Evan Fournier, Mario Hezonja, Channing Frye and Dewayne Dedmon could easily file in.
There are numerous options and we went over them during the summer on Orlando Magic Daily. The answer will come soon as camp prepares to open.
