Jason Day is already among the great golfers playing today. Wins have just been hard to come by of late.
Day had not finished better than 10th with a missed cut in the early going of this year’s PGA TOUR season. He was slowly beginning to carry the momentum from his strong end of the season — four first-place finishes in his final seven turnovers.
It was only a matter of time before he started racing back out again.
He followed a 6-under first round with seven birdies and no bogeys to take a 13-under score into the third round at the Arnold Palmer Invitational and the lead midway through the tournament.
“It felt great,” Day told Brian Wacker of PGATOUR.com. “It felt like it was the second half of last year, especially today, hitting long drives, hitting smart shots into the greens and holing big putts.”
When Day is playing well like he was Friday, there is not a lot the rest of the Tour is going to be able to do.
The tournament is not won yet as the Arnold Palmer Invitational always has quite the field.
Henrik Stenson is lurking behind Day — he has already tied Day at -13 early on in the third round with tee times moved up because of impending weather in Orlando — finishing his second round at 11-under.
Day is not facing any kind of cake walk. He will have to remain on his game.
Among the notable cuts were two-time defending champion Matt Every, Matt Kuchar and Luke Donald. Rory McIlroy made the cut with a 5-under 67 to get to 2-under heading to the final two rounds.
Day though has clearly set the standard with his solid driving and great play around the greens. It feels like Day is getting ready to take over and continue his momentum from last year.
