Despite NBA playoffs dominating television viewers nationally, NBC’s Sunday coverage of the PLAYERS Championship in Jacksonville was the most-watched sporting event of the week in Central Florida. The final round of the PLAYERS Championship, won by Jason Day, garnered 85,771 viewers according to Nielsen.
It defeated Game Seven of the NBA Playoffs second round matchup between the Miami Heat and Toronto Raptors that aired on ABC.
Game Four of the Heat-Raptors series on Monday night on TNT was the most-watched sports telecast by viewers 18-49 demographic for the week, while Game Five on Wednesday was the third most-watched sports telecast of the week from NBA Playoffs standpoint. Game Five of the series between the Oklahoma City Thunder and San Antonio Spurs finished second for the week in most-watched NBA playoff games in Central Florida.
It is the second week in a row that a non-NBA Playoff game was the most-watched sporting event in Central Florida as last week’s Kentucky Derby was the number one sports program of the week. This Saturday the Preakness will be airing on NBC on Saturday.
The NBA playoffs this week will offer the Western Conference Finals between the Oklahoma City Thunder and the Golden State Warriors that will air on TNT and the Eastern Conference finals between the Toronto Raptors and Cleveland Cavaliers, which will air on ESPN.
The PLAYERS Championship was the most-watched golf round of the year in Central Florida easily topping the final round of the Arnold Palmer Invitational from Bay Hill Golf Club in Orlando back in March.
The overall number one television program of the week in Central Florida was the season finale of CBS’ comedy hit The Big Bang Theory which had 219,425 viewers
