The replacement at Buffalo for now-UCF athletic director Danny White is a familiar one for White. The Bulls will be led by White’s deputy athletic director.
UCF is still getting to know its new athletic director in Danny White.
There is something of a buzz — as much as there can be for a new athletic director in his first week on the job — about what he could bring to the program. He clearly has a pedigree in athletic departments and has accomplished a lot in a short time.
He is every bit the rising star that has been described everywhere. And what is going on at his old school is a sign of that as much as anything.
Buffalo moved quickly to hire Allen Greene to replace White. Greene worked with White for two years at Buffalo, spending last year as his deputy athletic director. Greene was White’s right-hand man.
Buffalo has seen plenty of growth — and a bit of marketing controversy — in White’s tenure. Greene is expected to continue that.
From the Buffalo blog Bull Run:
Green takes over a program which has seen improvements in performance, revenue, and academic excellence in recent years. He has worked with Danny White for years prior to their experience at Buffalo and the two share a vision for the university.
White certainly helped put Buffalo on a new path. The program has been aggressive with its rebrand — to some controversy in the Buffalo community and Greene is already tiptoeing around the school’s plans to brand itself more as a statewide program than as Buffalo — and it has been a program that has made itself more competitive in its conference.
Moving on to a school like UCF with some better resources in many ways — certainly the school’s conference and history in football at least are stronger than Buffalo, not to mention Orlando’s market over Buffalo — could mean he copies much of his success at his old school.
That would be the hope at least.
Buffalo hiring his deputy athletic director certainly seems to be an affirmation of the job he did at Buffalo.
