More people watched Jameis Winston’s Tampa Bay Buccaneers upset win at the New Orleans Saints in Orlando on Sunday than UCF product Blake Bortles leading the Jacksonville Jaguars to an upset win over the Miami Dolphins.
The Bucs’ win over the Saints garnered 213,334 viewers while the Dolphins-Jaguars had 196,036 locally Sunday. It is worth to keep in mind that the Buccaneers-Saints game, which was a 1 p.m. game carried on FOX did not go up against a NFL game on CBS as this week it was FOX that carried a doubleheader in Orlando.
The Dolphins-Jaguars game, on the other hand, which was a 4:05 p.m. kick off carried on CBS-WKMG went up against the NFL on FOX national game between the Dallas Cowboys and Philadelphia Eagles, which drew 191,189 viewers in Orlando.
This also was the first time the Bucs were shown locally in Orlando as last week’s home opener against the Tennessee Titans was not shown locally as WKMG opted to show the CBS national game between the Ravens and the Broncos. Peyton Manning is a big TV draw and the could not go wrong carrying Manning and the Broncos, who have drawn Orlando viewers over the years.
The Bucs’ television numbers in Orlando have struggled the last few seasons with the team losing as often as they have. But Winston, who helped Florida State win the National Title in 2013, has a big following in Orlando area with a lot of Seminoles fans. It should give the Bucs a boost in viewership like Blake Bortles did with the Jaguars last season in Orlando with UCF fans following how Bortles is doing in the NFL.
All three state teams — the Bucs, Dolphins and Jaguars — will be carried in Orlando on Sunday with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers taking on the Houston Texans with a 1 p.m. kickoff carried on FOX, while the Jacksonville Jaguars take on the defending Super Bowl champions New England Patriots on CBS at 1 p.m. followed by the Miami Dolphins hosting the Buffalo Bills.
